Jabra Sport Coach earphones review – your own virtual personal trainer

One thing that people need to get into shape is motivation and often that is in the form of a personal trainer urging them on during a workout. Jabra’s new Sport Coach earphones can do just that.

The Jabra Sport Coach earphones connect wirelessly to your mobile device via Bluetooth or with NFC (near field communication) and are designed to be sweat and weatherproof.

They have a secure fit in your ear so they are not going to come loose no matter how physical you get with your workout.

In terms of audio, the Sport Coach earphones delivers Jabra’s signature quality complete with Dolby enhancement so your music is going to sound great whether you’re in the middle of a workout or relaxing with your favourite tunes.

The intelligent coaching comes from the Jabra Sport Life app users can access once the earphones are connected to the iPhone or Android device.

It is here where users can plan, track and analyse their indoor and outdoor workouts.

And like a real personal trainer, the Jabra Sport Coach can talk you through your workout, instruct you on your next exercise and tell you when time is up and when it’s time to rest.

jabrasportcoach5

It’s possible to create your own workout or follow one of the existing cross training routines.

There are more than 40 exercises to choose from that makes it easy to put together a workout.

Some of the exercises include burpees, crunches, kettle bell swings, planks, squat jumps, dips and many more.

This means you can concentrate on various parts of your body – like your core with an abdominal workout or your legs with lunges and wall sits.

Each exercise is fully explained with an illustration so you can see exactly how it needs to be performed safely and effectively.

You can also set a time limit for each exercise or choose a certain number of repetitions. And you can do your workout anywhere – at home, at the gym or in the park.

When you’re ready to go the Jabra Sport Coach’s female voice cuts over the top of whatever you happen to be listening to.

jabrasportcoach4

There’s no need to even look at your smartphone during the workout because the Sport Coach is talking to you the whole time announcing the exercise, when you start and finish and how much time there is remaining.

But if you have positioned your smartphone to keep it on view you can see a picture of the designated exercise and the countdown or number of reps that need to be completed.

And if you’ve set your workout to repetitions rather than time you simply tap the sport button on the left earpiece when you’re done so you can move on to the next exercise.

If you decide to head outside and include running with your cross training, the Jabra Sports Coach earphones built-in TrackFit motion sensor can measure your distance, pace, cadence and calories burned.

jabrasportcoach6

The Jabra Sport Coach earphones can also conduct a fitness test by seeing how far you can run in 12 minutes.

You can keep track of all your workouts out in the app as well to easily monitor your progress as you aim to reach your fitness goals.

We couldn’t fault the Jabra earphones – they are comfortable to wear and sound great.

The Jabra Sport app could be a little more intuitive. It took us a while to figure out how we can customise our own workout and deleting a workout we created also wasn’t plainly obvious.

jabrasportscoach9

The earphones will still work with other popular fitness apps like Endomondo, RunKeeper, MapMyFitness, Strava and Runtastic.

There is a built-in rechargeable battery in the Jabra earphones that will run for more than five hours of use.

And because the earphones are paired to your smartphone you can also make and receive phone calls while you’re wearing them.

The Jabra Sport Coach earphones come in three colours – blue, red and yellow – and will be available from mid-July from Rebel stores and JB Hi-Fi for $199.

VERDICT

The Jabra Sport Coach earphones offer an excellent solution for anyone who wants to stay in shape and enjoy high quality audio.

It’s like having your own virtual personal trainer with you wherever you go and with as much motivation and encouragement you’d get with real thing – but without the bill.
