Meta is literally changing the shape of virtual reality after unveiling its new controller-free high-end VR glasses – Meta VR – which will go on sale in the first half of 2027 at a price of $US1,299.99.
Meta’s new device has a sleek and lightweight design which makes it easy for users to play games, enjoy cinematic experiences, sit courtside at major sporting events and enjoy a new level of productivity.
Meta VR has a small and light form factor with no straps or heavy hardware on the user’s face so it can be worn comfortably for extended periods.
The Meta VR glasses are 5 times lighter than Meta Quest 3.
They have a magnesium alloy construction for added strength and rigidity.
The device’s battery, storage and processor are housed in a smartphone-shaped puck that connects to the glasses with an optical tether.
The biggest change with Meta VR compared to its previous VR headsets is the move away from any hand controllers and complex setup processes.
Instead users navigate simply look at an app icon or button and use a tap of their index finger and thumb together to click.
To scroll users simply make a soft fist and move their thumb to scroll through pages, all the while their hands are comfortably by their side.
It’s also possible to use voice commands to control the navigation and system settings hands-free.
Meta VR can also be used as a workspace, with the ability to spread out your work on a large virtual screen and set up a virtual typewriter on a surface in front of you.
The Meta VR glasses include a 5K infinite display built on micro OLED panels with 37 pixels per degree.
The result is a stunningly sharp and clear picture, which is perfect for text legibility and punchy graphics.
The compact pancake lenses have been built specifically for the device and is why it can achieve cinema-grade clarity while being able to fit in a product that looks like a pair of glasses.
It also includes Dolby Vision so you can enjoy the same quality as you would on the latest smart TVs including vivid colour, impressive contrast, and lifelike detail.
On the audio side Dolby Atmos support also provides immersive spatial audio that’s integrated directly into the device.
Meta AI is also at the heart of the product and is central to the operating system.
The VR glasses are powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Reality Elite processor which provides exceptional performance, faster load times, and breakthrough power efficiency.
The battery offers up to three hours of continuous high-resolution playback and gaming and supports 45W fast charging.
On the content side Meta is working with several partners across the industry.
It is also the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device ever to allow users to experience select films in IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio anywhere.
Meta has also partnered with Disney on 3D experiences, with Disney+ subscribers able to start streaming movies like The Avengers, Black Panther, and more in 3D in select countries.
There will also be themed immersive viewing environments as well as VR-enhanced cinema, where the space around the screen becomes part of the story.
After launch users will be able to watch films like Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope in the new Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM app.
Meta has also partnered with other streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Plex and Tubi with HBO Max and Paramount Plus also offering their 3D media catalogues for the very first time.

On the productivity side users can enjoy a massive screen anywhere they are and turn any table or desk into a Surface keyboard and touchpad.
Users will also be able to connect their Mac or Windows PC wirelessly or via USB-C and bring their own keyboard and mouse to enjoy full-colour passthrough where you can still see your keyboard, desk, phone, and surroundings while you work.
And when it comes to gaming there will be plenty of choices, including more than 75 games at launch that you can play just with hand gestures.

Is also access to Xbox Cloud gaming to stream hundreds of games directly to the VR glasses. Users will be able to connect a Bluetooth gamepad to create an on-the-go gaming experience.
They can also connect a handheld gaming device wirelessly or via USB-C to play on a bigger screen.
Meta is also introducing a new hologram technology so you can present a photorealistic digital version of yourself, which includes expressions and reactions in real time, for video calling on the Meta VR glasses.
During the call the other person will appear in front of you, with spatial audio placing their voice where they are, so it feels like they’re in the same room.
The new Meta VR glasses will go on sale in the US spring 2027 and will be priced at $US1,299.99.
